Ten frequently asked questions about the university of texas school of law
1. How does the admission process work?
The Law School first calculates a Texas Index for each applicant using the candidate's undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) and Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score. Candidates with an index above a certain point (which changes from year to year) will automatically receive offers of admission. The admissions committee reviews all of the remaining applications for evidence of other factors that might indicate the candidate's ability to succeed at the Law School. This screening produces just under one-half of the entering class.
2. How many people apply for admission?
Each year the Law School receives about 4,000 applications for the 500 seats in the entering class. About 1,500 of those come from nonresidents for the 15 percent of the class allocated to students from states other than Texas.
3. What are my chances for admission if I don't have a high gpa and lsat?
While the Law School takes pride in the outstanding paper credentials of its student body, the admissions committee recognizes that other factors can and do predict a candidate's potential for law study. While students with LSAT/GPA combinations far below the median do not generally gain admission, the committee does consider such factors as graduate education (although graduate grades do not count in calculation of the Texas Index), improvement in academic performance over time, relevant work experience, and letters of recommendation that discuss the candidate's ability rather than merely vouching for character and congeniality. The Law School also seeks diversity in the racial and ethnic background and life experiences of its student body and. considers those factors in admissions.
