IV. Make an adequate written translation of the following passage:

Тот роман был без сюжета, а точнее то был психологический этюд. Единственный герой, молодой парижанин. Всю жизнь он был занят только тем, что в XIX пытался вернуть к жизни страсти и способ мышления всех прошлых веков, чтобы самому прожить все те события, которые прожила вся мировая душа. Его безумно интересовали формы, которые люди привыкли называть добродетелями, и в той же степени-те естественные формы, которые мудрецы всё ещё называют пороками. Книга была написана своеобразным жёстким слогом, живым, ярким и в то же время расплывчатым, в ней также присутствовало огромное количество арго, технических выражений и архаизмов. Именно в таком стиле писали художники-символисты, выходцы из французской школы. Так же присутствовали и метафоры, разукрашенные в такие же нежные краски, как и орхидеи. Внутренняя человеческая жизнь описывалась мистико-философскими понятиями. Временами было трудно понять, читаешь ли ты описание религиозных мыслей какого-нибудь святого, либо бесстыдные высказывания современного грешника. Это была книга, насквозь пропитанная ядом. Казалось, что никотиновый дым исходил от её страниц и затуманивал мозг. Так, проглатывая одну главу за другой, Дориан и не заметил, что день сменился вечером, и углы комнаты покрылись тенями.

V. Comment on the phrase: «…art conceals the artist far more completely than it ever reveals him».

It is a mistake to think that the passion one feels in creation is ever really shown in the work one creates. Art is always more abstract than we fancy. Form and color tell us of form and color- that is all.

VI. Describe Sibyl Vane and her feeling during and after the play (chapter VII):

During the play Sibyl Vane as curiously listless. She showed no sigh of joy when her eyes rests on Romeo. She spoke in a thoroughly artificial manner. The voice was exquisite, but from the point of view of tone it was absolutely false. It made the passion unreal. She seemed to be absolutely incompetent. She looked charming as she came out in the moonlight, but the staginess of her acting was unbearable. Her gestures became absurdly artificial. She declaimed with the painful precision of a schoolgirl who has been taught to recite by some second-rate professor of elocution. She was absolutely self-contained. She was a complete failure.

After the play Sibyl Vane told Dorian that she had acted badly that night and she would not be able to act well again. She explained to him that before she had known him, acting had been the one reality of her life and she thought that it had been all true. The joy and the sorrows of the characters had been hers the common people who had acted with her had seemed to her to be godlike. She added that when Dorian had come, he had freed her soul from prison. Sibyl thought that night she had seen the silliness of the empty pageant. She began hating the stage because she could not mimic a passion that she did not feel. And she was happy to be in love with Dorian.
