7. Translate from Russian into English.

Critical thinking

1. Can you read faces? Explain why.

2. “People with thin, soft, looser or porcelain-like skin tend to be more impressionable both emotionally and physically. Those with thin, fine hair are refined emotionally. A thick, full lower lip indicates spontaneous generosity to friends and strangers as well as talkativeness. A ski-slope upturned nose person will usually be a poor money manager” (George Roman, personology expert). Do you agree with this point of view?

3. The French say that women must not be extremely pretty, but they are obliged to be stylish. Imagine that you are a famous TV performer or a film star. Describe your favourite style of dress. You should say what kind of clothes you like to wear and what kind of clothes you feel least comfortable in, what fabrics and colours you prefer, what (or who) influences you in your choice of clothes and explain whether clothes are important to you or not.

4. How do facial expressions help you in everyday communication? Give some examples from your life.

5. What kind of difficulties can arise when people communicate without being able to see each other, by telephone or e-mail for example?

6. Why is it better for children to play with friends than play on a computer?

7. How can you tell if someone is embarrassed? What kind of situations make you feel embarrassed?

8. Would you like it to be different? If so, what else would you like to change about your appearance?

9. Can you think of a famous woman you would describe as beautiful, and a famous man you would describe as good-looking?

10. Think about a recent interaction you had with another person. What forms of nonverbal communication did you, or the other person, use to convey thoughts or feelings?
