Listening comprehension The Story of Fairy Tales

Pre-Text Activities

  1. Do you know these words? If not, consult the dictionary and use them in sentences of your own.

Fairy tale, Cinderella, protagonist, to occur, to take in, even though, to have a lot in common, stepsister, miracle, comparison.

  1. Match the words from ex.1 and their definitions. Make up your own sentences with these words.

  1. The process of considering how things or people are similar and how are they different.

  2. To happen especially unexpectedly.

  3. Someone or something that has good qualities but is treated badly or ignored.

  4. A traditional children’s story in which magic things happen.

  5. To allow somebody to stay in your house or your country.

  6. To have the same interests or opinions as someone else.

  7. An event that can’t be explained according to the laws of nature and is considered to be an act of God.

  8. The main character in a play, film, book, or story.

  9. The daughter of their stepfather or stepmother.

  10. Is used for introducing a fact that makes the main statement in your sentence very surprising.

  1. Before listening to the story, try to answer the following questions.

  1. Have you read fairy tales “Cinderella” and “Harry Potter”? If yes, what are they about?

  2. Are the themes used in these stories quite similar?

  3. Do the themes of these stories have great meaning today? Why?

Post-Text Activities

4. Listen to the story and match the first part of each sentence with the correct second part.

1. Cinderella and Harry Potter have unkind

5. Listen to the story again, agree or disagree with the following sentences.

1) In both fairy tales the families are very unhappy about taking them in.

3) Both characters have no relative their own age.

4) Cinderella and Harry Potter have one wish: to live somewhere else leading a different life.

5) No miracle happens in the tales.

6) They have a chance to change the unchangeable, to become what they wished for, to live a better life.

7) They both find their place in the world, and people who love them.

6. In groups of four, discuss the following statements adding your own thoughts and experience.

1. These stories have a character who is treated unkindly. This treatment is what helps the character look for change. Without the desire for change there would be no tale, and this is very important.

2. One idea that runs through throughout every story – we must live cautiously. In these tales, peace and happiness can exist if warnings are obeyed.

3. All happiness depends on one action. All will be lost if one bad thing happens.

4. Every person has a chance to change the unchangeable, to become what they wished for, to live a better life. But not everyone uses this chance.
