T EXT 15 A EXPORT LICENCE. OTHER CONDITIONS OF THE CONTRACT.

See the list of those taking part in the talks on page 288. It's three o'clock, as has been agreed upon on the phone.

Everybody is in the negotiation's (conference) room.

Mr в. "Good afternoon, gentlemen."

"Glad to see you all again today. Make yourselves comfortable. The weather's not so good this afternoon." "It's pretty nasty and there seems to be no end of rain." "Shall we start with a cup of coffee or tea for a change then?" "Oh, gladly though it's a bit early. Many thanks indeed." (some time later)

MrB. "Well now I feel much much better, thank you." V. "Another cup?"

MrB. "No, thank you. So these are our last preliminary talks, Mr Vetrov, aren't they?" V. "I think so. Much depends on you." MrB. "Oh, does it? O'you mean I'm not co-operative enough?" V."No, I don't. On the contrary I've been very pleased with the progress of our talks, aren't you?" MrB. “ So am I. Actually I didn't think we could manage to finish off that soon."

V"Are there any remarks to make about the Licence Clause?" MrB. "No, everything seems to be to the point. As to the other Provisions Clause I have the following to say. First, we don't quite see why we should send copies of our correspondence with you to the Trade Delegation. Could you explain that, please?"

"You see we've got our representative at the Trade Delegation who is supposed to be fully in the picture about the performance of the contract. He's in charge of our inspectors who come here to inspect the goods while they're being manufactured - he's having somehow controlling functions. So that would help settling some matters quicker." "Then there's no problem. Secondly, we object to giving names in the contract of any firms providing services because that could lead to their raising fees for their services when we apply to them."

"You really think so? But we want to be sure that skilled and experienced companies will be employed. How can you ensure that?"

"Well, you must believe us that we're interested in qualified services, too, first of all, or else if you insist on it, why don’t we agree on the choice of companies and state that in a special confidential letter or a separate document? Though if you ask me, I'd rather you left this choice with us." "Let's leave it open for the time being. I'm sure it'll be settled this or that way by the time one contract is to be signed Agreed?"

"Agreed. Well then, we seem to have finished, haven't we?" "On yes and sooner than we expected." "We'd like you all to join us for dinner and then we'll see a musical show."

"We'll be delighted. Thank you."

"It's a bit early for dinner now. You know what we'll do: we'll be off now, and at half past six my driver will pick you up, and we'll meet you at the restaurant." "All right. *

(on the way out of the building)

"Look, the rain has stopped. And though there's no sunshine yet, I feel radiant. The air's fresh and pleasant."

Yes, it even seems fragrant. I feel it in my lungs. How nice it is."

"And the feeling of having done a good job adds to it." "Yes indeed. Thank you for your contribution to the successful outcome of the talks,

"Not at all. Not at all. I must emphasize, Mr Vetrov, that you had your finger in it, too. Don't try to belittle your own substantial share. I'm grateful."

"All's well that ends well."

"So we'll be meeting again a third time."

"Yes, as the Russians say, "Бог троицу любит", which

be translated: "The God loves the three'

"Oh, that's a nice proverb. I must remember it. Will you put

down in my note-book, please?"

"I will. Here it is."

"Thank you. You've put it down both in English and in Rus

sian. I must learn Russian one day."

"The sooner you do it, Mr Brownie, the better for you, believe me."

A. "First of all, it's necessary to determine the market with the largest

potential capacity for the product in question." B. "Can our exporting enterprises do it themselves?"

"Your advice's good, I'll follow it. The three - Oh, I know

Originally it must have been the Holy Three1 --"

V. B.

"Yes. Father, Son and the Holy Spirit."

"I see now the origin of the proverb. We call it the Trinity - in

Christian teaching that means union of three persons in one

God."

V.

IrB. V.

"Oh well, but the proverb is used in a different meaning in

every day life now."

"Yes, quite. Till the evening then."

"So long."
