First Age

256 Barazbizar, also called Redhall, is founded at the northwestern tip of the Misty Mountains by Durin’s Folk.

c. 400 The Swarthy Men cross the Misty Mountains at Longshiver Pass, and some of them settle the Nan Angmar and northern Eriador, where they make contact with Durin’s Folk. However, they are prevented from taking better lands by the Eriadorians.

457 The folks of Bòr and Ulfang cross the Blue Mountains. There they swear allegiance to Maedhros, and settle in East Beleriand.

c. 500 War between the Eriadorians and the Easterlings of the Lhûn valley. The Easterlings have to move eastwards.

c. 587 The War of Wrath and the fall of Angband causes a mass migration of peoples away from Beleriand. The first to move are the Easterlings of Hithlum and Upper Gelion, followed by many tribes of Orcs.

  1. The surviving kin of Bòr crosses the Blue Mountains and meets with their long-sundered kin in Angmar. Here their lore and skill are valued, and some of them become Kings.

  2. The folk of Ulfang, fleeing the ruin of Beleriand, resettle in northern Eriador. At first there is enmity between them and the other swarthy men.

Second Age

1 A mass invasion of Orcs threatens the lands of the Swarthy Men. The folk of Ulfang prove their strength. The Orc army is defeated, but many bands manage to reach the Southern Spur of the Misty Mountains.

5 Another invasion of Orcs forces the Swarthy Men together. Bodar is made King of the tribes of Angmar. He marries Alathasa, daughter of Ulcasot.

  1. The joined forces of the Easterlings defeat an Orc-host at the battle of the Southern Spur.

  1. An Orc-host led by Mukarg ravages Angmar, but heads towards Mount Gundabad. Baurad, nephew of Bodar, leads some hundreds of Swarthy Men across the Southern Spur.

  1. Mukarg is defeated at Mount Gundabad. The Orc Gram unites the bands of fugitives in the Southern Spur and takes the title of Orc King.

  2. Bodar is slain at the battle of Mount Gram. Some say that Carasot, brother of Alathasa, had him assassinated. Rodar, brother of Bodar claims the crown, until his heir Brodec is at age. Carasot also claims the crown as the most powerful warrior. The Orc-hold of Mount Gram founded.

  3. Carasot leads a winter raid on Bodars hold, and slays him, taking the regency.

  4. Carasot routes an army of Orcs from the plains at Deadfield.

  1. Rodar dies at 9, some say of disease, others assassinated. Carasot takes the crown.

  1. Bodar’s nephew, Baradas slays King Odarost and takes the crown.

  1. Baradas makes an alliance with the Dwarves of Redhall (Ku. “Barazbizar”, Ang. “Voroshbak”).

40 Baradas and the dwarves defeat invading Orcs at Redhall.

  1. Baradas slain in battle. Defeat of Mount Gram. The kingdom is divided between Baskas, legitimate heir, who rules eastern Angmar, and Orakur, Odarost’ son, who rules the western part of the country. Both renew their friendship with the Dwarves.

  1. King Dragoz of western Angmar dies without issue: while King Mallor of eastern Angmar reclaims the crown, two cousins of Dragoz fight for the succession. The Northern Spur begins to be roamed by Orc bands.

  1. King Lorgan of eastern Angmar is killed in battle in western Angmar. His crown, too, is reclaimed by three relatives.

90 King Gram begins a series of raids into Angmar, gathering slaves for his mines.

  1. King Gram besieges Redhall, and orders the founding of outposts in the Northern Spur. However, the Orc-king is slain after a siege of three months, when help from Gundabad comes. The Orc-crown is taken by Oraga, but the Orcs are divided by petty rivalries and their unity is gone.

  1. A group of Northmen migrate from the Narrows into the Anduin valley, conquering the swarthy men’s kingdoms. Over a few generation, the swarthy men are absorbed by the Northmen, who mix their race and culture with the conquered.

  1. The Orcs make a major raid in the upper Anduin Valley.

  2. King Dròin II of Gundabad, after warring with the Northmen for many years, is able to make an alliance with them.

  1. At the battle of Waldamot, Dwarves and Northmen inflict a hard defeat on the Orcs.

  1. King Frérin I of Redhall supports Kull of Ironhill for the crown of Angmar.

  1. After successful campaigning, Kull names himself king of Angmar, though controlling only the western part of the country.

  1. Kull assassinated by his son Kola.

221 King Drérin II of Redhall begins a storming of the Northern Spur, to destroy all Orc-holds.

  1. Foldar I of the line of Kull, allied with the dwarves of Redhall, begins a storming of the Southern Spur.

  1. Siege of Mount Gram.

  1. Fall of Mount Gram, which becomes a hold of Dùrin’s Folk.

  1. Foldar I unifies Angmar.

  1. At Foldar’s death his second son Koder emerges as a heir, taking the crown.

  1. Koder poisoned by his nephew Kallarok.

  1. Kallarok killed by Koders’ third son Varad.

  1. Varad stabbed by his second wife. As the crown passes to her son Kucedor, the firstborn Hagyst flees in the eastern part of the country, where he takes his own crown. The kingdom is divided again. King Drérin refuses to take a part, and the friendship with the Dwarves begins to wane.

  1. The relative safety of the Mountains and the wars in Angmar trigger the colonisation of the rugged lands beyond the southern spur, where new domains rise. As heirs of Angmarean Lords come to take new land for themselves, the descendants of Baurad’s Folk resist them.

  1. Pasard, chief of the tribes of Baurad’s Folk, is defeated at the battle of Etten’s Moor by an alliance of Angmarean lords. Therefore he leads many of his kinsmen into the hills.

  1. Golden Age of the Southern Kingdoms. The settlers mine gold and copper, and practice agriculture, helping the rise of many Dwarf-hold with whom they trade.

  1. The colonisation of the White River’s valley cause attrition with the local tribes of Eriadorians.

  1. Wars between the new kingdoms and Eriadorians.

  1. Rise of the kingdom of Goldenhill (Ang. “Karjkoder”), with King Luftam I.

  1. King Luftam II establishes the War Council. The institution is at first a consultative meeting of feudal lords, but soon becomes a forum where the policies of the kingdom are discussed and approved by the power of the factions.

  1. King Odorid III establishes the War Council in eastern Angmar.

545 King Farudir I faces a revolt of feudal lords, and is forced to approve a War Council.

  1. The Eriadorians plunder Goldenhill. Fall of the Kingdom. Many Swarthy Men take refuge on the Mountains or on steep hills inside the woods.

c. 600 Orc activity rises on the western side of the Misty Mountains, especially between the High Pass of Forcirith and the Southern Spur. Trolls multiply in the foothills. Royal authority among the Swarthy men decline, while feudal lords gather more and more power.

608 In western Angmar, King Turambor I is slain by his vassals at the War Council, and there they choose a successor among them. For the first time, a King is crowned and blessed by his vassals at a War Meeting, starting a tradition that will be respected for many years among all Swarthy Men.

c. 700 Men from Dunland, already settled in the lands between the Hoarwell and the White River, move North and make contact with the Swarthy Men, developing trade.

c. 800 Tribes of Dunmen invade the hills, where they clash with Baudar’s people. They are eventually defeated and absorbed through the centuries, creating a new people.

  1. Sauron of Mordor sets up an Orcish army threatening the Anduin Valley.

  1. Sauron’s army, led by Skorg, wastes the upper Anduin Vale, and besieges Gundabad.

1699 Eriador overrun by Sauron’s forces. Eriadorian bands of fugitives either laid waste or are captured and enslaved in western Angmar, eventually mixing with the locals. Gundabad falls to Skorg, while the Grey Mountains are settled by Orcs. King Farudan I of eastern Angmar defends the Northern Passes.

  1. The Orcs of the Misty Mountains start raiding the Swarthy Men.

  2. Sauron defeated by Eldar and Nùmenoreans and driven out of Eriador. King Farudan slain at the Northern Pass: his kingdom crumbles under the attack of the Orcs. Fall of Mount Gram to the Orcs.

  3. All Swarthy men suffer dearly by the plague of Orc-raids. The Dwarves of Redhall close their gates. The reign of terror of Skorg lasts for two hundred and thirty years, as his Orcs enslave and plunder the Swarthy Men and the Northmen of the upper Anduin vale and the Narrows. The kingdoms of the swarthy men crumble, as each Lord tries to defend his land from his own castle. This is remembered as the Dark Age.

  1. Skorg dies. Strife for power breaks his Empire, as Mount Gram, the High Pass Citadel and other holds ignore the authority of the Ashburduk.

  2. The Dwarves attack and take Gundabad, playing on the divisions between the tribes. Thanks to the help of the Dwarves of Redhall, life and peace flourish again, starting from the northwestern domains of Angmar. Trade is reborn, and local alliances are able to repel some Orc-raids, forcing the marauders to become more wary.

c. 1940 Mornerin peoples enter the region of Angmar from the northwest. At first they are considered enemies by the Swarthy Men, but as soon as they appear to be enemies of the Orcs, friendship arises between the two peoples. The lords of western Angmar give them lands in exchange of their allegiance.

1949 Thanks to the support of the Dwarves, the War Council is established in NW Angmar. However, no King is chosen: the Lords only meet to discuss wars and alliances against the Orcs.

1961 A War Council is established near Cargash.

c. 2000 Migrations of peoples bring the Ystavat Talven to Forochel. The Dwarves and the Angmareans establish some links with them, trading hides and ivory for metal and tools.

2018 Tarmar of Axewood is chosen King of south-western Angmar, to lead his people against the Orcs of Mount Gram. Similar Kings appear in the following century all over the land.

c. 2200 Other northern peoples reach Forochel, raiding all settlements they found. The Swarthy Men name them Snow-riders or Bear-riders. Though the Mountains refrain most of their raids, the Western Angmarim learn to hate them. The Dwarves of Redhall are besieged, and many of them die.

c. 2250-2400 As the Bear-riders’ raids gradually stop, Dwarves explore the North, founding mines that are later abandoned. Many of them come from Redhall, whose mines are thought to be ending.

  1. The region of northeastern Angmar, after many bloody successions, finally establishes the election of a Warlord, with sole military leadership. The Warlord institution quickly spread in all Angmar save Cargash, where Tarmar’s line manages to establish a dynasty, though murder among relatives is still frequent.

  1. The battle of Betrayer's Hill: Warlord Osrac, whose election has been supported by the Dwarven King of Redhall, is ambushed by his rival Harsgalt. With Osrac die many Dwarves at his following. Friendship between the two peoples wanes, trade shrinks.

  1. Redhall is finally abandoned. His royal family moves to Forodwaith, where is later extinguished by Dragons.

c. 2900 Carn-dûm is resettled by the Broadbeam King Thràr II, who makes it his capital. Trade links with the Angmareans are established.

3320 Elendil founds Arnor. His envoys are turned back by the Swarthy Men, who consider them dangerous invaders.

c. 3400 Prior to the War of the Last Alliance, Orcs launch raids into Angmar to gather slaves and weaken the Dwarves’ allies. During these years, the population of Swarthy Men, already weakened by internal wars, is greatly diminished. Everywhere but in the westernmost lands, the War Council is abandoned in favour of isolationism.
