Victorian Britain

  • a great expansion of the British Empire

  • a long period of peace (the exception was the Crimean War of 1854-1856)

  • the population of England double from 16,8 million 1851 to 30,5 million in 1901

  • in February 1840 Victoria married her cousin Prince Albert.

  • The role of the House of Commons increased, the monarch became more symbolic.

She has 4 son, 5 daughter, and 44 grandchildren. She rules 63 years and 7 months.

Edward 7

He was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India from 1901 until his death in 1910.

The only monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha Edward’s main interests: affairs, military and naval matters.

1909 – the constitutional crises when the Conservative majority in the Lords refused to pas the Liberal budget.

George 5

He was a King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India from 1910 through World War (1914-1918) until his death in 1936. He was the first British monarch of the House of Windson.

Edward 8

He was a King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India from 20 January 1936 until his abdication in on 11 December 1936.

1936 - married a divorced American Wellis Simpson and abdicated.

He reigned 325 days and was never crowned.

George 6

He was a King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from 1936 until his death in 1952.

He was the last Emperor of India (until 1947), the last King of Ireland (until 1949), and the first Head of the Commonwealth. Gained popularity during the Second World War (1939-1945).

1940 - instituted the George Cross and George Medal to be awarded for acts of Bravery by citizens, Alfred the Second World War the British Empire declined.

1947 – the independence of India and Pakistan.

1949 – the foundation of the Republic of Ireland the break-up of the Empire and its transitions in to the Commonwealth of Nations.

Elizabeth 2

She in 1952 became Head of the Commonwealth, and Queen of seven independent Commonwealth, countries; the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zeeland and etc.

The UK is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional Monarch as Head of State.

England is the only country in the UK not to move its own separate parliament.

The Northern Ireland Assembly of 108 members was elected in June 1998. In May 1999 the Scottish Parliament in Edinburg and Welsh Assembly in Cardiff were established.

The Queen only rules symbolically.

The British government runs the UK. The leader of the government is the Prime Minister. The leader of the political party with the most MPs in the House of Commons is as head by the Queen to became Prime Minister and to form a government that will mange the country.

At present, the Prime Minister is David Cameron, who is also the leader of the Conservation Party.

The official residence of the Prime Minister is at Number 10 Downing Street.

Chequers is used as the Prime Minister non-London residence.
