Introductory remarks lights

TYPES OF PRINTING USED FOR NAMES OF LIGHTS. —The names and visibilities of lights intended for making the coast and the visibilities of lights which show 15 miles and over are printed in thick (Ionic) letters; lights other than the above in ordinary (Roman) Type. The names of light-vessels are shown in Italic Capitals; floating lights other than the above in Italics.

(U) after the name of a light indicates that it is Unwatched, and therefore must not be implicitly relied on.

POSITIONS OF LIGHTS. —The latitudes and longitudes given in the list are approximate, and are only intended to facilitate reference to a chart

SYSTEM of COLOURING LIGHTS on CHARTS. —The approximate position of a shore light is indicated by a yellow colour of a shade distinctly visible both by day and by artificial light, and sufficiently transparent to enable the engraved star or dot denoting the exact position of the light to be clearly seen through it.

CHARACTERISTICS. — Lights may either show a continuous steady light, or be varied by the introduction of flashes and eclipses. They are divided generally into two classes, as shown below in parallel columns, viz.: —

(1) Lights whose colour does not alter throughout the entire system of changes;

(2) Lights which alter in colour;

both classes having the same characteristic phases.
