STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF RHYME AND RHYTHMICAL STRUCTURE

PRACTICE SECTION

1. Analyse the rhythm, rhyme and metre of the poems below. Does the rhythmcal and metrical organisation of the poem support its emotional atmosphere?

Beside the springs of Dove,

A Maid whom there were none to praise

A violet by a mossy stone

When the lamp is shattered

The light in the dust lies dead—

2. Choose one of the poems from Seminar 4 – ‘Meeting at Night’, ‘Kubla Khan’ or ‘Ballade Made in the Hot Weather’ – and analyse its rhythm, rhyme and metre. Comment upon the way the rhythmcal and metrical organisation of the poem supports the emotional atmosphere in it.
