Phonetics (from the Greek: phōnē, "sound, voice") is a science that studies sounds of human speech. There are 44 sounds in English: 20 vowels and 24 consonants.

Phonetic transcription is a universal system for transcribing sounds of spoken language. Marks of transcription:

  1. We write transcription in brackets: [ ].

  2. We put stress mark (') before the stressed syllable: ['TIqtq].

  3. We show a long vowel with the help of colon (:): leave [lJv] and live [lIv].
