Noam Chomsky and Generative Grammar

Described in the book ‘Syntactic Structures’ by Chomsky (1957)

Chomsky claimed the linguistic theory is mentalistic, concerned with discovering a mental reality underlying actual behavior. Ling theory must be concerned with competence first – with an ideal speaker-hearer in a completely homogenous community, who knows his l-ge perfectly and is unaffected by such grammatically irrelevant conditions as memory limitations, shifts of attention, errors in applying his knowledge of l-ge on actual speech.

The Contemporary Scene

What's the scene today? A very lively but confused picture of new dimensions, difficulties and antagonisms. One comparatively new approach is that of brain physiology. Much, perhaps the greater part, remains to be understood of precisely how the brain functions. But it is clear that consciousness (being aware of the world, having mental images, and feelings and intentions) proceeds by a complex system of neural loops and feedbacks.

Language allows us to elaborate, refine, connect, create and remember. All this happens together. {13} Animals learn as they need to. Dogs, for example, reared in total isolation, have no understanding of pain and will sniff repeatedly at a lighted match. And for human beings the sense of self comes through the joint development of social and linguistic behaviour, each operating on the other, so that attempts to study speech in narrow disciplines — physiology, psychology, linguistics, information theory, structuralism , etc. — are doomed to failure.

Scientific literature comprises scientific publications that report original empirical and theoretical work in the natural and social sciences, and within a scientific field is often abbreviated as the literature. Academic publishing is the process of placing the results of one's research into the literature.

Publication

To publish is to make content available to the general public.[1][2] While specific use of the term may vary among countries, it is usually applied to text, images, or other audio-visual content on any traditional medium, including paper (newspapers, magazines, catalogs, etc.). The word publication means the act of publishing, and also refers to any printed copies.

General scientific summaries

The aim of the general scientific summary in NJP is for an author to explain to a general reader (with an assumed graduate physics background) why their research was done and why the results are important.

In writing a general scientific summary, authors are asked to adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. The summary should not be longer than 250 words.

  2. The summary should be structured into the following three distinct sub-sections (the headings must be included in the text):

  • Introduction and background – a short and accessible introduction to the topic aimed at providing a brief outline of the current state of scientific knowledge in the field.

  • Main result(s) – a synopsis of the main result(s) reported in the paper and a statement of how scientific knowledge on the topic has been extended as a result of the study.

  • Wider implications – a summarizing statement that puts the work into a broader context and highlights any wider implications and directions for future study.

  • There should be no equations.

  • Authors are strongly encouraged to include one representative figure (with caption).

  • All non-standard symbols, abbreviations and acronyms should be defined in full.

Essays are generally scholarly pieces of writing written from an author's personal point of view, but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article, a pamphlet and a short story. Scientific essays are challenging to write. While most essays are conversational and persuasive, a scientific essay is meant to inform. The structure and format of a scientific essay is different from other types of writing. Knowing these key differences is an important part of writing a well-written essay. Here is how to write a scientific essay.
