Case history
A 33 –year- old man was admitted to the dental clinic for removal of a loose, painful tooth. Previously he had been admitted to the clinic for observation and treatment of myelofibrosis.
There was a red, ulcerated region around the upper left third molar, especially on the palatal side. One month later the upper left second molar became loose and painful and was extracted.
Examination of the tissue from the ulcer revealed inflammatory infiltrate with numerous lymphocytes, some phagocytes and some neutrophils, plus large number of small rounded, faintly eosinophilic bodies. The diagnosis of cryptococcus infection was made. Topical therapy with amphotericin was used and the ulcer healed within eight weeks.
