PART I

PRE-TEXT ASSIGNMENTS

Exercise 1. Practice pronunciation:

myelofibrosis [maiə1əfai'brəusis], loose [lu:z], heal [hi:l], numerous [ʹnju:mər(ə)s], ulcerate ['Λlsəreit], lymphocyte ['limfəsait], cryptococcus [kriptə'kנkəs], eosinophilic [i:əsino'filik].

Exercise 2. Topic vocabulary:

Exercise 4. Read and translate the text:

Case history

A 33 –year- old man was admitted to the dental clinic for removal of a loose, painful tooth. Previously he had been admitted to the clinic for observation and treatment of myelofibrosis.

There was a red, ulcerated region around the upper left third molar, especially on the palatal side. One month later the upper left second molar became loose and painful and was extracted.

Examination of the tissue from the ulcer revealed inflammatory infiltrate with numerous lymphocytes, some phagocytes and some neutrophils, plus large number of small rounded, faintly eosinophilic bodies. The diagnosis of cryptococcus infection was made. Topical therapy with amphotericin was used and the ulcer healed within eight weeks.

POST-TEXT ASSIGNMENTS

Exercise 5. Put the given sentences into interrogative form and give a short answer:

Exercise 6. Form nouns corresponding to the given verbs and translate them into Ukrainian:

to restore, to observe, to remove, to ulcerate, to relieve, to fill, to diagnose, to use, to heal.

Exercise 7. Make adjectives from the following nouns and learn them:

Tooth, mouth, liver, kidney, heart, eye, lungs, ear.

Exercise 8. Give a short outline оf the text “Case history”.
