2. Translation Patterns list of patterns

1) Clause pattern:

a) English: IF/WHEN/SHOULD/IN CASE/IN THE EVENT Clause = Russian: В СЛУЧАЕ/ПРИ/НА МОМЕНТ + NOUN in the Genitive Case

e.g.

when a company is wound up – в случае/при ликвидации компании;

when a company needs money – при возникновении у компании необходимости в деньгах;

b) English: UNTIL Clause = Russian: ДО + NOUN in the Genitive Case

e.g.

until the company is wound up – до ликвидации компании;

until the loan is paid in full – до полного погашения кредита;

NB!

Like in general English Present Simple is used in most such clauses, but Present Perfect clause is highly recommended to emphasize the action commited.

e.g.

После назначения арбитра	When the arbitrator has been appointed…
В случае возникновения обстоятельств непреодолимой силы	If the Force-Majeure Circumstances occur…

2) Enumeration pattern

(a number of Russian nouns describing various activities of a person correspond to the set of English infinitives)

e.g.

The trustee in bankruptcy is empowered to monitor the debtor’estate, preserve its assets, restore the debtor to solvency and carry out such proceedings as provided by the Bankruptcy Law.

К полномочиям конкурсного управляющего относятся: осуществление надзора за имуществом должника, обеспечение сохранности его активов, восстановление платежеспособности должника и осуществление процедур, предусмотренных Законом о банкротстве.

3) Infinitive pattern:

a) English: NOUN + Infinitive = Russian: NOUN + Preposition (ДЛЯ/ПО) + NOUN in the Genitive Case

b) English: NOUN + INFINITIVE = Russian: NOUN + NOUN in the Genitive Case

c) English: Noun + Link Verb (TO BE) + Infinitive = Russian: Noun in the Genitive case + Link Verb (ЯВЛЯЕТСЯ/СЛУЖИТ) + Noun (e.g. Целью является привлечение…);

N.B.!

Commonly in translating such patterns into Russian we tend to reflect the connotation of the respective English infinitive by means of two Russian nouns one of which is a verbal noun denoting the respective action (осуществление, внесение, etc.), and the other directly reflects the meaning of the infinitive to be translated.

e.g.

(a)

The Lender’s decision to make payments – решение Кредитора об осуществлении платежа

liability to contribute to the debts of the company – ответственность по внесению вклада в оплату долгов компании;

e.g.

(c)

the reason was to raise funds – причиной послужил сбор средств;

the principal object of the Company is to earn profit – основной целью компании является получение прибыли.

4) Gerund pattern:

ПУТЕМ + noun in the genitive case = BY + GERUND

Or

ПРИ/В ХОДЕ + NOUN = IN + GERUND/NOUN

Or

В ХОДЕ + NOUN = AT/IN THE COURSE OF + NOUN/VERBAL NOUN

e.g.

by issuing shares – путем выпуска акций;

by taking guarantees from the members – путем получения гарантий от членов;

In appointing	При/в ходе назначения
In considering	При/в ходе рассмотрения
In analyzing	В ходе анализа/при анализе
At the hearing	В ходе слушаний
In the course of bankruptcy	В ходе процедуры банкротства

5) English: ADVERB + VERB = Russian: ADJECTIVE + NOUN

e.g.

Инвестор обязуется приложить все усилия для своевременного представления документов в соответствующие органы.

The Investor undertakes to exert its best efforts to promptly file the documents with the relevant authorities.

6) English: NOUN + ATTRIBUTE (WHICH-Clause/Adjective/Participle) = Russian: ATTRIBUTE + NOUN

e.g.

a limit which is always clear – всегда четко установленный лимит;

Interest accrued	Начисленные проценты
Debts incurred	Понесенные долги
Losses suffered	Понесенные убытки

NB!

If in English one come across the pattern containing a number of nouns and/or adjectives used without prepositions (Noun/Adjective + Noun + Noun + Noun), the last noun in the chain should be viewed as the key word in the pattern and translated first, the other nouns and/or adjectives should be considered as attributes to the noun in question and translated respectively.

e.g.

The Lessee shall ensure that the Permitted Uses are in accordance with applicable construction, sanitary, fire, environmental and other RF Legislation.

Арендатор обязуется обеспечить соответствие Разрешенных видов использования действующему строительному, санитарному, противопожарному, природоохранному и иному законодательству РФ.

7) Russian impersonal construction is equal to the principal clause (subject + predicate) in English

English: The Law provides for…

Russian: Законом предусматривается…
