The Nuremberg Trial

On October 1, 1946, the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg passed sentence on the chief war criminals of Hitler Germany.

The Tribunal recognized aggression as an international crime. For war crimes, for crimes against peace and humanity it condemned both the organizers, the leaders and those, who executed their orders and were participants in these crimes.

The Tribunal's eight judges, who signed the sentence, were provided with much proof of crimes unprecendented in history which had been committed by the nazi war criminals: mass murders of millions of innocent people in concentration death camps.

The sentence passed by the International Military Tribunal declared in part:

"The truth is that war crimes were committed on a large scale, never before seen in the history of war. They were committed in all the countries occupied by the German fascists. These crimes were committed under circumstances of cruelty and horror».

The Nuremberg trial was conducted in strict conformity with the generally accepted norms of criminal law. It was conducted in an atmosphere of the strictest legality and used the generally accepted methods of proving the guilt of the defendants. All defendants had their own counsels for the defence, who were guaranteed every opportunity to study all the prosecution evidence.

In this connection the attempts of the proponents of aggression to question the legality and justice of the Nuremberg trial were groundless.

The principles laid down in the Nuremberg sentence concerning the criminal character of aggressive wars, legal actions against persons guilty in initiating and conducting them were approved by the UN General Assembly and have become an important part of existing International Law.
