Arkhangelsk is the capital of Arkhangelsk Oblast. It is an administrative, industrial and cultural centre in the north of Russia

Arkhangelsk is situated on the banks of the Northern Dvina. The climate of the city is subarctic with long winters and short summers.

Arkhangelsk was founded in 1584. Its original name was Novye Kholmogory. Arkhangelsk got its present-day name in 1613.

In the 17-th century it was an only sea port in the North of Russia.

Arkhangelsk is called ”the cradle” of the Russian shipbuilding, because the first Russian shipbuilding yard was founded in Arkhangelsk.

In the 19^th and 20-th centuries our town became real “gates to the Arctic”, because many polar expeditions started from Arkhangelsk sea port.

Present-day Arkhangelsk is a large port, an industrial and transport centre.

Now the population of the city is about 350 thousand people.

Arkhangelsk is also a cultural centre. We have three theatres and some museums. We also have some very good creative groups.

Many festivals take place in our city.

The Russian Federation (Russia) is the largest countrу in the world. Its total area is over 17 million square kilometers. It is located in Europe and Asia. Russia is washed by twelve seas and three oceans. It borders on 14 countries.

The territory of the country is various. There are a lot of forests, rivers, lakes and mountains in Russia.

There are various types of climate on its territory. In the north it is cold, even in summer. The central part of the country has a mild climate. In the south it is warm, even in winter.

Russia has rich natural resources. It has oil, gas, coal, gold, nickel.

The population of Russia is about 150 million people.

The official language of the country is Russian.

Moscow is its capital.

Russia is a federal republic.

The head of the state is the President.

Russia has three national symbols – a flag, a two-headed eagle and a hymn.

M.V. Lomonosov is the greatest Russians scientist and poet.

He was born in1711 in the village of Denisovka near Kholmogori in Arkhangelsk gubernia. His father was a fisherman.

Lomonosov did not go to school but he could read and write well. He got his knowledge from books.

In 1730 at the age of nineteen Lomonosov left his home and went to Moscow. He wanted to study.

In Moscow he entered the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy.

Lomonosov was a very good student.

After finishing the Academy he studied in Germany. Lomonosov learnt German, French, English and Italian. He studied chemistry, physics, mining, mathematics.

At the age of thirty Lomonosov returned to Russia.

Lomonosov was a very talented man. He wrote the Russian Grammar. He was a poet and prose writer. He headed a mosaic workshop. He did a lot of experiments. He founded the first Russian University in Moscow.

M.V.Lomonosov died at the age of fifty-four in 1765.
