E Learning is learning utilizing electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom. In most cases, it refers to a course, program or degree delivered completely online.
There are many terms used to describe learning that is delivered online, via the internet, ranging from Distance Education, to computerized electronic learning, online learning, internet learning and many others.
We define eLearning as courses that are specifically delivered via the internet to some where other than the classroom where the professor is teaching. It is not a course delivered via a DVD or CD-ROM, videotape or over a television channel. It is interactive in that you can also communicate with your teachers, professors or other students in your class. Sometimes it is delivered live, where you can “electronically” raise your hand and interact in real time and sometimes it is a lecture that has been prerecorded.
E-education is electronic mode of know ledge and skill transmission, this does not necessarily involve physical contact between teacher and student. The concept computerized teaching and learning have given birth to computer-aided instruction (CIA). This process represents the combination of both knowledge and skill impartation. Access to electronic materials through the internet is flexible, ensures broad feasibility and accessibility of educational opportunities.
E-Learning is nothing but the use of technology to connect teachers and students who are physically miles apart. The training can be delivered by multimedia CD-ROMs, interactive videodisks and Web technology.
There are fundamentally two types of e-Learning:
Synchronous training
Asynchronous training
1. Synchronous, means “at the same time,” involves interaction of participants with an instructor via the Web in real time. For example – VCRs or Virtual class rooms that are nothing else but real classrooms online. Participants interact with each other and instructors through instant messaging, chat, audio and video conferencing etc and what’s more all the sessions can be recorded and played back.
2. Asynchronous, which means “not at the same time,” allows the participants to complete the WBT (Web-based training) at their own pace, without live interaction with the instructor. Basically, it is information that is accessible on a self-help basis. The advantage is that this kind of e-Learning offers the learners the information they need whenever they need it. It also has interaction amongst participants through message boards, bulletin boards and discussion forums. These include computer based training,(CBTs) modules on CD-Rom’s, Web based training accessed through intranet (WBTs) or through well written articles and other write ups.
