Discharging

The cargo is discharged in accordance with the regulations and customs of the port if otherwise is stipulated in the Bill of Lading or Charter Party.

To arrange delivery of the cargo the Master is to advise the agent in the port of discharge of the ship’s ETA and the latter in his turn the consignees and port authorities.

On arrival of the ship the agent is served on the Notice of Ship’s Readiness to Discharge, the Copy of the Stowage Plan, list of dangerous goods if any. If during the voyage the circumstances which might have caused damage to the cargo aboard took place, the Master declares a Sea Protest which is to be lodged before breaking bulk. The Sea Protest is noted within 24 hours of arrival of the ship in the port to protect rights and legitimate interests of the shipowners.

The Master is entitled to deliver the goods against the Original Bills of Lading and only after he has ascertained that freight and other charges due to the ship have been paid.

After completion of discharging the Outturn Report is tendered on the ship. It contains data about the quantity of the cargo discharged, shortage or excesses if such took place.

Sometimes the cargo is delivered in small separate lots against Receiver’s Receipts which are collected by the Cargo Officer and exchanged for a duly signed Original Bill of Lading.

The Cargo Officer is responsible for cargo operations on the part of the ship and supervises the tally of goods and the work of stevedores.

In accordance with the Charter Party terms the vessel is often to procure her cargo facilities to carry out discharging and also provide for proper lighting in the holds.
