Krasnoyarsk institute of railway transport
__________
I am a student of the Krasnoyarsk Institute of Railway Transport. It trains qualified railway specialists with higher education for Siberia and Krasnoyarsk region. It was founded in 1955 as a consultation centre of the Moscow Extra-mural Institute of Railway Engineers. The total number of students was 500 and the teaching staff consisted of 10 people. In 2002 it was named the Krasnoyarsk branch of the Irkutsk State Railway Transport University that trained railway engineers in 6 specialities. With the railway transport development and modernization more and more qualified engineers of various specialities were required, that is why the number of students increased.
__________
At present about 5,000 students get higher education at day-time and extramural departments. The graduates of our institute can get a bachelor’s or master’s degree at the end of their study. The training of masters is provided on 4 specialities such as Railway Operation; Railway Construction; Railway Rolling Stock and Railway Traffic Systems. Bachelors are prepared on 5 directions. They are Transport Processes Technology, Transport Machinery Operation, Railway Economics and Personnel Management. Students of the extramural department have the opportunity to get higher education combining their work with study.
__________
Entrance to our institute is competitive. School-leavers enter the Railway Institute on the basis of their results in the unified state examinations for the secondary school. Some applicants may be admitted according to their results of the entrance trial conducted in the form of the written test.
__________
The complete course of studies at our higher school lasts 4 years for the bachelor training and 5 years for training masters. The academic year is divided into 2 terms: from September to January and from February to July. Credits and exams are taken at the end of each term. During the period of learning every student must pass a lot of term exams, not counting written and oral tests. If the results of the examinations are good, students receive grants which are given by the state or the enterprise which has sent him or her to study. Twice a year students have vacations in winter and summer. Comfortable hostels can be provided for those students who come for studying from other places.
__________
The first- and second-year students study such general engineering subjects as Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Technical Drawing and a number of others. The study of foreign languages is also included in the course of training. In the third year students begin to study specialized subjects; special attention is paid to the development of students’ abilities and skills in their chosen speciality. Students have practical training in specially equipped labs and workshops and on the railway. They are able to take part in scientific conferences that take place annually. After the third year some students continue their studies in the Irkutsk State Railway Transport University. Senior students devote the final year to working on a graduation project which is submitted to the State Examination Commission. After the graduation from the Railway Institute in Irkutsk every student receives a diploma which gives him/her the right to work as an engineer, an economist or a book-keeper. For those students who want to continue their education our higher educational institution has a post-graduate course.
