Language and Religion

English is the most commonly used and official language of Montana. German, Spanish, French and Italian are also spoken.

38.10% of the people in Montana are religious, meaning they affiliate with a religion. Christianity is the official religion of Montana. The various denominations of the religion include Protestants, Roman Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, and the Presbyterian Church. There are also a few Jews and Muslims in the state.

Interesting Facts

  • Fields of grain cover much of Montana's plains. It ranks high among the states in wheat and barley, with rye, oats, flaxseed, sugar beets, and potatoes as other important crops. Sheep and cattle raising make significant contributions to the economy.

  • The density of the state is six people per square mile. Sadly (or luckily), there are more cattle in Montana than there are people.

  • The Montana Yogo Sapphire is the only North American gem to be included in the Crown Jewels of England.

  • Jeannette Rankin of Missoula, Montana, was the first woman elected to the United States Congress.

  • Montana is the only state in the United States without a modern naval ship named in its honor.

  • In Montana, it is illegal for married women to go fishing alone on Sundays, and illegal for unmarried women to fish alone at all.

  • In Helena, Montana it is illegal to throw an item across a street.

Places to Visit

  1. Bannack, Montana's first territorial capital, has been preserved as a ghost town state park along once gold-laden Grasshopper Creek.

  2. Virginia City was founded in 1863 and is considered to be the most complete original town of its kind in the United States.

  3. Glacier National Park is a national park located in the U.S. state of Montana, on the Canada–United States border with the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The park encompasses over 1 million acres (4,000 km2) and includes parts of two mountain ranges (sub-ranges of the Rocky Mountains), over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals. This vast pristine ecosystem is the centerpiece of what has been referred to as the "Crown of the Continent Ecosystem", a region of protected land encompassing 16,000 square miles (41,000 km2)

  4. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument preserves the site of the June 25 and 26, 1876, Battle of the Little Bighorn, near Crow Agency, Montana, in the United States. It also serves as a memorial to those who fought in the battle: George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry and a combined Lakota-Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes force. The fight was an overwhelming victory for the Indian tribes, led by several major war leaders.

  5. Yellowstone National Park is a national park located primarily in the U.S. state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone, widely held to be the first national park in the world, is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion.
