У даній роботі ми досліджували засоби вираження спонукання до дії в англійській мові.
Спонукання до дії – один з різновидів відношення змісту речення до об'єктивної дійсності з точки зору суб’єкта мовлення. Разом з тим це – одне з граматично виражених комунікативних призначень речення так чи інакше впливати на волю співбесідника.
Матеріалом для проведення дослідження стали художні твори англійських письменників, з яких було вибрано 157 прикладів застосування спонукання до дії в різних комунікативних ситуаціях.
Розглядаючи ці приклади, ми помітили, що спонукання тут виражається за допомогою різних лексичних та граматичних засобів: наказового способу, питально-заперечних речень, питань з will you…?, would you…?, розповідних речень з семантичними інваріантами спонукання та ін.
Дослідження виявило: для вираження різних функціонально-семантичних типів спонукання (наказу, прохання, благання, рекомендації, пропозиції) найчастіше використовується наказовий спосіб та його варіанти. Він становить 106 прикладів із 157 наведених, що складає 67, 52 %. Наприклад, «Go back, Emily, and see what it is they want,” says one» аnd Emily comes back, and asks what it is(Jerome. K. Jerome “Three” p. 106).
З цих 106 прикладів:
46 – власне наказовий спосіб у стверджувальній формі (це складає 43,4% від загальної кількості прикладів наказового способу):
«Come in!–The man who entered was a sturdy, middle-sized fellow, some thirty years of age» (A. C. Doyle “Adventures…” p. 71);
«Then dress! – As I dressed I glanced at my watch» (A. C. Doyle “Adventures…” p. 144);
«Stop it! I cried; pull yourself together! and I poured out some water from a caraffe. – It was useless, however». (A. C. Doyle “Adventures”p.205);
10 – власне наказовий спосіб у заперечній формі (це складає 9,43% від загальної кількості прикладів наказового способу):
«And don’t stuff up your head with things you don’t understand. – I followed the directions, with the happy result—speaking for myself—that my life was preserved, and is still going on» ( Jerome. K. Jerome “Three” p. 8);

Для спонукання до дії рідше використовуються розповідні речення, які містять у своїй структурі модальні дієслова та слова з модальним значенням. Такі речення становлять 27 прикладів із 157 наведених у роботі, що складає 17,2%. З цих 27 прикладів:
10 – містять модальне дієслово must (що складає 13,2% від загальної кількості прикладів розповідних речень):
«You must scrape them. So we scraped them and it was harder work then peeling» . (Jerome. K. Jerome «Three» p. 170);
«You must put it on, she said with a smile. – I? I don’t think I’ll do that». ( W.S. Maugham «Rain…» p197);

7 – містять модальне дієслово shall/will (це складає 26% від загальної кількості прикладів розповідних речень):

Ще рідше для спонукання до дії використовуються питальні речення «will you…?/would you…?». Вони становлять 10 прикладів із 157 наведених, що складає 6,62%.
«Will you bet, then? – It’s merely taking your money, for I know that I am right». (A. C. Doyle «Adventures…»p. 166);
«Will you come with me?” asked Holmes, glancing up. – I should wish to». (A. C. Doyle «Adventures…» p. 287);
«Would you care to look at the menu?, he said, handing it to Cooper. – It was written in French and the dishes had resounding names». (W.S. Maugham «Rain…» p.89).
Також для спонукання до дії використовуються розповідні речення з семантичним інваріантом спонукання. Вони становлять 7 прикладів із 157 наведених, що складає 4,46%. З них:
5 – розповідні речення з семантичним інваріантом спонукання «I want you to+ інфінітив» (це складає 71,42% від загальної кількості прикладів розповідних речень з семантичним інваріантом спонукання):
«I want you all to pray with me for the soul of our erring sister. – Mrs. Macphail and Mrs. Davidson knelt with covered eyes. (W.S. Maugham «Rain…» p.72);
«I want him to do what`s right. It shouldn`t be necessary to persuade a man to do that.– But there may be differences of opinion about what is right».(W.S. Maugham «Rain…» p.60);

Ще одним засобом вираження спонукання є питально-заперечні форми. Вони становлять 7 прикладів із 157 наведених, що складає 4,46%:
«Ain’t you going to put the boots in?” said Harris. – And I looked round, and found I had forgotten them. Jerome. K. Jerome «Three»p. 43).
«Won`t you have a cup of tea?" asked Mrs. Tower. –If it wouldn`t be too much trouble. (W.S. Maugham «Rain…» p. 320).
Всі ці засоби використовуються для вираження різних функціонально-семантичних типів спонукання, таких як прохання, наказ, пропозиція, благання, рекомендація.
Для вираження прохання (загальна кількість прикладів – 46) використовуються:
1. Наказовий спосіб (стверджувальна форма). Становить 9 прикладів, що складає 19,6 %. Наприклад:
«Give us a hand here! – I never could withstand an appeal for help, so I went and undid them». (Jerome. K. Jerome «Three…» p. 114).
2. Розповідне речення із семантичним інваріатом спонукання. Становить 7 прикладів, що складає 15,2%. Наприклад:
«Her fianceе is coining to dine here to-night to be introduced to me, and I want you to come too.– Oh, but I shall be in the way». (W.S. Maugham «Rain…» p.322).
3. Питальні речення з will you…?/ Would you…?. Становить 7 прикладів, що складає 15,2%. Наприклад:
«Will you come with me?” asked Holmes, glancing up. – I should wish to». (A. C. Doyle «Adventures…» p. 287).
4. Розповідне речення з shall/will. Становить 4 приклади, що складає 8,7%. Наприклад:
«I shall want your help tonight. –At what time?». (A. C. Doyle «Adventures…» p.48).
5. Наказовий спосіб з Lets, Let me; Let smb Становить 4 приклади, що складає 8,7 %. Наприклад:

2. Наказовий спосіб + підмет. Становить 7 прикладів, що складає 16,7 %. Наприклад:

3. Наказовий спосіб з Lets; Let me; Let smb. Становить 6 прикладів, що складає 20 %. Наприклад:

1. Наказовий спосіб з pray. Становить 20 прикладів, що складає 83,3%. Наприклад:

To do this, we must try the simplest means first, and these lie undoubtedly in an advertisement in all the evening papers.
