a) Dwell on the variety of the physical features and the climate of the USA using the map (see appendix 2) and the information from the text or from other additional sources.
b) How do you understand the following statement: “The greatest barriers are not canyons or mountains, but fences and borders.”
c) Work in pairs comparing the geographical positions of the US and Great Britain and decide which country has more favourable conditions for: 1) agriculture and farming; 2) heavy industry; 3) (health) tourism. Explain your choice.
Using additional material prepare a presentation about any important historical event from exercise 5.
Make up a dialogue between: 1) two Americans talking about their country; 2) the leaders of the major political parties on the eve of the elections; 3) a journalist and the president after his inauguration; 4) two friends planning the best itinerary for a week trip in the USA.
Dramatize the following situation: representatives of the three branches of power are talking about their responsibilities in a political talk-show. There should be an interviewer and some audience to ask questions.

Many people’s ideas about the Old South are influenced by “Gone with the wind”. Think about a movie you’ve seen that takes place in the United States. What kinds of impressions and ideas about the USA do you think the movie gives people? Do you think those impressions are accurate?

amendment is about? What other amendments do you know? What is the
purpose of the amendments?
The United States is a superpower. In what ways does it influence other countries? Do you think this influence is positive or negative?
Sometimes the USA is referred to as “melting pot”, sometimes as “mosaic”. What does it mean? Which definition in your opinion is more suitable for this country?
Do you think only politically active people can be true patriots of their country? Do you think people should protest against government policies they disagree with? How do you think they should express their disagreement?
Do you know that there are several weird and funny laws in the USA? These are some of them: all lollipops are banned in Washington; it is against the law to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or a street lamp in Atlanta; in Massachusetts, snoring is prohibited unless all bedroom windows are closed and locked. How can you explain their existence?

1. Мандруючи країною, ми бачили величезне різноманіття пейзажів від безперервних гір із оголеними вершинами до безводних пустель, що простягнулися уздовж нескінченних магістралей. 2. Цей метрополіс відомий своїми хмарочосами, що є прикладами інженерної майстерності. 3. Незважаючи на вулканічну активність в цьому районі, долина, що затишно розташувалась біля підніжжя гір, усіяна десятками привабливих хатинок. 4. Жоден з них не заперечував, тож рішення було прийнято одноголосно. 5. У відповідь на суворе покарання представники профспілок спалили десяток ящиків із високоякісною сировиною. 6. Нехай ці події закарбуються у твоїй пам’яті та допоможуть у майбутньому відвернути небажані ситуації. 7. Треба щось робити, перш ніж це протиборство переросте у справжній заколот. 8. Каркаси майбутніх офісних будівель височилися над охайними двоповерховими житловими будиночками. 9. Серед багатьох невід’ємних прав, гарантованих Конституцією, це є найбільш спірним. 10. Безперервний ланцюг шорстких (нерівних) гір слугував природною перешкодою, що стримувала велику кількість опадів. Та незважаючи на це інколи дрібний дощ міг продовжуватися тижнями. 11. Великий скарб захований у цих родючих землях, багатих також й на корисні копалини, серед яких у великій кількості видобуваються цинк, мідь та інші негорючі природні ресурси. 12. Тобі пощастило, що ти зустрів людину, обдаровану багатьма талантами. 13. Все почалося із жартівливого зауваження щодо його поведінки на вечірці серед друзів, але згодом цей жарт просочився у компанію, де він працював. З того часу це стало його прізвиськом. 14. Він був дуже збентежений, адже замість сучасного метрополісу він опинився у віддаленому містечку, що виглядало як одне з цих моторошних покинутих міст, які можна побачити у кіно. 15. У будь-якій цивілізованій країні існує три окремі гілки влади – законодавча, виконавча та судова. У Сполучених Штатах законодавча влада належить Конгресу, який складається із Сенату та Палати Представників. Законопроект, прийнятий обома палатами, відсилають до Президента, який представляє виконавчу владу. 16. Судова гілка влади представлена Верховним Судом. 17. Новий власник музею не тільки зберіг казкову спадщину, залишену попереднім господарем, але й зробив елітне мистецтво більш доступним загалу. 18. У пошуках незвичних вражень він обирав не головні, менш залюднені дороги, щоб помилуватися вражаючими пейзажами сільської місцевості. 19. Ти можеш мені пояснити, що означає слово “bayou”? – Це заболочена притока річки або затоки, така місцевість є характерною для півдня Сполучених Штатів. 20. В межах нового проекту ідея співпраці з іноземними спеціалістами виглядає дуже привабливо.
