The Institute of Veterinary Medicine My Speciality

I. Read, translate and retell the text:

My Speciality

I study at Altai Agricultural University. I am a first (second)-year student of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of the day-time (extra-mural) department. The institute trains qualified specialists for the veterinary service of our country.

An important part in the development of animal husbandry in our country is played by the veterinary service.

Animal diseases can cause great damage to the herds of cattle. They reduce the profits of farms. To prevent and control diseases of livestock and poultry, to control epizootics and to carry out veterinary-sanitation work are the main tasks of the veterinary service.

Veterinarians wage a constant struggle against diseases common to animals and man and thus protect people's health saving them from such horrible diseases as anthrax, brucellosis or tuberculosis.

Neither meat, milk nor their products can be sold without veterinarian's examination.

Veterinary science develops and introduces into practice reliable ways and means of specific and general prophylaxis and environmental sanitation, methods of diagnostics of animal diseases.

Prophylaxis is the chief trend of the veterinary service in the country. It is important to develop in animals immunity to various infections. This is achieved with the help of vaccines.

Veterinary laboratories contribute greatly to the fight against animal diseases. The main function of them is to conduct examinations of various nature to establish diagnose or causes of animal's death and to rule out a disease.

Nowadays these laboratories can diagnose all infectious and parasitic diseases and some diseases of non-infectious nature. They become centres for organizing disease eradication and environmental sanitation programmes for practical application of advanced method and scientific discoveries.

The veterinarian must know rules and regulations designed to conserve animal life and to safeguard the public health. Specialized types of work in which he may engage are the following:

  1. Consultation regarding problems of animal health and disease.

  2. Hospitalization of sick and injured animals, including medical and surgical treatment.

  3. Eradication of tuberculosis and brucellosis in livestock.

  4. Vaccination of animals against anthrax, blackleg, brucellosis, tetanus and against several infectious diseases of poultry.

  5. Inspection of food supplies of animal origin to prevent the transmission of animal diseases to man and to maintain their quality and sanitary condition.
