Edinburgh

1.Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It lies in seven hills and goes down those hills to the sea. The highest hill is three hundred meters above the sea. From the street in the center of the city you can see ships coming to Edinburgh from different countries of the world.

2.In the “old town” the streets are narrow. The tall houses with narrow windows go up the hills to Edinburgh castle, which is one of thousand years old. The modern town lies at the foot of the hills. The streets are straight and well planned, so it is easy to walk in the street when you go sightseeing in Edinburgh. Many great men have lived in Edinburgh. Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet, published his first book of poems in Edinburgh. There is a monument to him in the city. Edinburgh is also

proud of Walter Scott, the father of the historical novel in world literature, and Robert Louis Stevenson, a famous English writer.

3.This city is a great education centre, there are three universities. Such scientists as John Napier who invented logarithms, Adam Smith, the father of political economy, Alexander Bell, the inventor of the telephone also lived and worked in Edinburgh.

4.The Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh is another official residence of the Queen besides Buckingham Palace. This Palace is a museum with the number of museums inside it. There is the Museum of Childhood with its unique collection of toys and games, the Writer’s Museum, the People Story Museum, which tells the story of ordinary people.

5.It seems that the past and present live in Edinburgh side by side, and it gives a special charm of the city. But in fact, Edinburgh is a busy town. People are employed in manufacturing industry: electrical and electronics engineering, paper printing and publishing, food and drink industry.

Washington

1.Washington is the capital of the United States of America. It is situated in the District of Columbia and is like no other city in the USA. It is the world’s largest one industry city. And that industry is government. The White House where the president lives and works, the Capitol, the home of the US Congress, and the Supreme Court, are all in Washington.

2.Washington was named after the first President George Washington. He selected the place for the capital and Pierre L’Enfant, French engineer, designed the city.

3.Washington was first settled in 1790 and since 1800 it has been the federal capital.

4.It is one of the most beautiful and unusual cities in the United States. The huge dome of Capitol – a big white dome standing on the circle of pillars rises in the centre of it. The 535 members of the Congress meet here to discuss the nation’s affairs. It’s easy to get lost in this huge building, full of paintings and statues.

5.The large library in the States is the Library of Congress; it is not far from the Capitol. There are more than 13 million books, 19 million manuscripts, including the personal papers of the US presidents.

6.The White House is the official residence of the US President. He works in the Oval Office.

7.There are many monuments and memorials in Washington. The most impressive is the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

8.The Lincoln Memorial is devoted to the memory of the 16th President of the US, the author of the Emancipation Proclamation, which gave freedom to Negro slaves in America.

9.To the south of the Potomac River, Pentagon is situated. It is the residence of the US Military Department.

10.In the Museum of Washington you can see al kinds of things: famous paintings sculptures, the dresses of Presidents’ wives, the originals of the Declaration of Independence, the largest blue diamond in the world, etc.

11.There are five universities in Washington. There are no skyscrapers, because they would hide the city’s many monuments from view. No building in the city may be more than 40 meters tall.

12.Thousands of tourists visit Washington every day. People from the parts of the United States come to see their capital.

New York

1. New York is not the capital of the United States, but it is the biggest and the most important city in the country. It is situated at the mouth of the Hudson River.

2.New York is the cosmopolitan city. It is the city of immigrants and in its streets you can hear practically every world language. There are even places where the English language is hardly ever heard.

3.New York is the largest city in the USA and the important business center. It is famous for its Statue of Liberty, which greets newcomers to the country. Wall Street in Manhattan is the financial heart of the USA and the most important banking centre in the world.

4.Broadway is the symbol of American theatre. The interaction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue forms world-famous Times Square, the heart of the New York Theatre District.

5.Park Avenue represents luxury and fashion of its large expensive apartment houses. Madison Avenue is the centre of advertising industry. Fifth Avenue is the most famous shopping centre.

6.Rockefeller Centre is a city-within-a-city. It was started during the Great Depression of the 1930s by John Rockefeller and it was built according to one general plan. Rockefeller Centre consists of 19 skyscrapers. All the houses are offices, enterprises, banks, theaters, music halls, restaurants, and shops. All parts of the complex are linked by underground passageways.

7.People often call New York the cultural capital of the USA. There are more than 800 museums in New York. One of the best known is Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its magnificent collection of European and American paintings contains works of the many greatest masters of art world.

8.The Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center is known through out the music world.

9.There are a lot of colleges and universities in New York, such as Columbia University, the State University of New York and others. Some people think that New York is too busy and crowded but people

love it for its excitement, entertainment and culture. It is also called the Big Apple or the city that never sleeps.
