Cast copper alloy sword chape. It is 54mm in length and is flat with turned over edges. It has a serrated top edge above openwork of circles and one trefoil. There is a plain band below. Below this, on the main body of the chape, is a openwork quatrefoil, with one elongated lobe. The bottom edge is finished with a knop. It is late 15th to 16th century in date.

Length: 54 mm Width: 34 mm Weight: 11.22 g

A cast, copper alloy sword chape, dating from c. 1450-1600. The chape is tapered at the base and ends in a small, spherical knop. The upper edge is concave and is decorated with small, transverse grooves to give a ropework effect, The centre of the outer surface is pierced with a hole in the shape of a cross fitchee, the upper portion and the crossbar being in the form of a trefoil. The chape has a dark brown patina. It is 39.1mm long, 27.3mm wide and 8mm thick. It weighs 11.76gm. The back plate is plain but complete. See Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition, Fig. 180, No. 1080 and SF-DE7B92.

Sheet copper alloy dagger scabbard chape length: 56mm; width: 22mm; thickness: 14mm; weight: 12.36g. This example is made from a plain copper alloy sheet, about 1mm thick, that has been folded into a conical shape. The aperture is oval with a V-shaped notch on the rim. the edges are overlapped a secured by a single rivet at the top. There is a large copper alloy rivet at the rim that secures the leather scabbard to the chape. Remains of the leather scabbard are still in place within the chape. The bottom has been cut into a V-shape. Examples are known from archaeological contexts in London and have been dated to the 14th-16th centuries (Ward, 1967, 280-288).

A sheet copper alloy dagger chape of possible Medieval date (AD 1066 - AD 1500). Length 52.3mm, width 19.1mm and 10.3mm thick. Weight 8.86g.

The sheet is folded to form a triangular shape with rounded corners in cross-section. It tapers from the open end to a sharp point. However, close to the pointed end the cross-section evolves into a sub-circular shape. Close to the open end, at each side, is a copper alloy rivet which penetrates the front and rear faces in order to firmly secure the chape to the scabbard. On the rear face there is a central longitudinal abutting join which does not appear to have been soldered. The chape contains part of a well preserved brown coloured leather scabbard.

A patina has not survived on the chape.

This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.

A sheet copper-alloy sword or dagger chape of Medieval date. It is triangular in form and folded around to produce an oval shaped attachment end with overlapping vertical seam down the centre of the back face of the chape. Traces of solder are present towards the base of the seam. The open/attachment end of the chape has an incised transverse band of decoration consisting of parallel grooves between which is a zig-zag line. Above this band the open end is crenelated with numerous radiating vertical grooves visible in each crenelation producing an almost scalloped appearance. On the front face of the chape beneath the transverse band there are five circular perforations arranged in a cross formed from one central circle with circles above, below, left and right.

A cast copper alloy Medieval scabbard chape. The chape is incomplete and cast integrally, front and back. It is a curvaceous V-shaped in plan with a knop at the lower apex. In section the chape is a ‘C’ shape. The terminals of the chape on one face have integral lugs with a circular perforation. The opposite face has broken lugs. The chape is undecorated. There are traces of a dark green patina; otherwise the surface is dark brown. The chape measures 32.3mm long, 33.16mm wide and 12.37mm thick. It weighs 17.8g.

An incomplete tinned copper alloy sheet Medieval dagger scabbard chape. The slightly flattened folded chape is truncated at the bottom edge. The upper edge is serrated and there are five rivet holes on the back, three of which still retain copper alloy rivets. The front is decorated with two engraved lines around the serrated edge and at the truncated end is a border of crosshatching with two engraved lines above. The surviving length is 16.7mm, the width is 24.9mm, the surviving thickness is 7.2mm and the weight is 3.67g.

A Medieval to Post Medieval copper alloy Scabbard mouth with the loop being to hang it from the belt. The mount is formed of a sheet of copper alloy which has been riveted together to form a ring. The attachment loop is also rivited to the mount. The surface of the mount has two bands of insised decoration, one with cross hatches and the other with dots. Below this the lower edge is scalloped with an insised leaf motif in each lobe and a circular perforation in between each. The surface has been heavily cleaned by the finder.
